Flying with care in Dallas, Texas
by Alan Norris
Helicopter Life goes with Careflight on a number of flights in the Agusta 109 Power and Bell 222 seeing how the crew give in-flight care.
Established in 1979, with one helicopter shared between two hospitals and transporting about 20 patients a month, CareFlite is the eighth oldest air medical transportation service in America, and the second oldest in Texas. In 1981 CareFlite began operating a ground ambulance division in Dallas to support the helicopters and provide non-emergency transportation to patients.
In the first years of operation CareFlite operated a Bell 206 Long Ranger but in 1991 purchased five Powers which have replaced four of the Bell 222. Careflight is the only helicopter EMS service in north central Texas operating under instrument flight rules.
The six helicopters operate from: Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital, Methodist Dallas Medical Centre, Denton Community Hospital, the Frisco Fire Department, and Grand Prairie Airport...
