Behind the scenes of the Museum of War

Although the current news coming out of Afghanistan seems to be all bad, a lot of good work has and still is being carried out by the United Nations, which since 2002 has been working with the help of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The ISAF is made up from a number of countries around the world, including Poland, Great Britain, the Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany. The primary role of ISAF has been to assist the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in providing a safe and secure environment across Afghanistan, to assist in the reconstruction of a new Afghanistan.

From the start, the Federal Republic of Germany has supported the work of ISAF by setting up a number of Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRT) in the Northern city of Kunduz. These civilian-led military teams work on infrastructure and reconstruction projects. They are supported by troops, whose primary role is to protect the aid workers building roads, schools and hospitals. In 2004, to provide support for its troops, and to assist the deployment of other members of ISAF, the German military established an air bridge at Termez Airport, in the Southern most part of Uzbekistan.
