Camp Marmal in Mazar-i-Sharif
Germany assumed control of Regional Command North (RC North) in Mazar-e Sharif, in the province of Balkh, after the UN Resolution of the 13th October 2003 had expanded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) to cover all of Afghanistan. This northern region is not essentially a combat zone. Here, the designation ‘less risky’ applies, small skirmishes or spectacular explosive attacks occur repeatedly, as recently happened in the Kunduz area, compelling ISAF units to undertake comprehensive security and reconnaissance measures.
Mazar-e Sharif is one of the holy cities of Islam, and the most important place of pilgrimage in Afghanistan. The city's name comes from the Persian, and it means Tomb of the Holy One. Afghans believe that Ali ibn Ali Talib, the first imam of the Shiites, and the son-in-law of Mohammed, is buried here... |
