Dubai, a town surrounded by desert on the edge of the Persian Gulf; a town where East meets West; where the population is around 6 million, of whom 5 million are foreigners; where women in Arabic dress talk on mobile phones, and men in dishdasha (traditional male Arab dress) fly helicopters. A town where it rains only a few days a year, and when it comes it falls in torrents; where there is a real-snow ski slope inside the Emirates Mall, with icy temperatures and windows from which to watch the tee-shirted people in the mall. A town where building, and traffic, never stops. A town where you walk through a Thai restaurant to get to an Irish pub, between a Polish barbecue and a French bistro, but you cannot buy alcohol in shops or supermarkets.
