Alternative Fuel

DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) of the Pentagon is just months away from producing a jet fuel from algae. DARPA claim that production will start in 2013.

While this cheap, low-carbon fuel would originally be for the US military, incidentally the single largest consumer of energy,  there would also be applications for civilian flying world-wide.
